Remains in Seattle
Seattle signed Thompson to a reserve/future contract Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Thompson earned a practice-squad contract after failing to make the Seahawks' initial 53-man roster, but he didn't make any appearances during the 2022 campaign. The Utah State product impressed during limited preseason action, and with his new contract, he'll have a chance to build off what he did with Seattle this year throughout the upcoming offseason.

Returns to Seattle
The Seahawks signed Thompson to their practice squad Wednesday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Thompson was solid during limited preseason action but didn't make the Seahawks' initial 53-man roster. However, he'll get a chance to work his way back to NFL game action via the practice squad.

Exits Seattle
Thompson was waived by the Seahawks on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Thompson was unsurprisingly unable to make it through the Seahawks final roster cuts. He will presumably be a candidate to land on the team's practice squad assuming he ultimately goes unclaimed on waivers.

Scores in preseason loss
Thompson rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown and caught his lone target for seven yards in Thursday's 27-11 preseason loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Thompson didn't play until the third quarter, as he's still firmly behind Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas in the fight for a roster spot. Nevertheless, Thompson was quite effective with his reps, showing a good ability to break tackles en route to the Seahawks' only touchdown of the evening. Thompson may be able to sneak onto the 53-man roster if Kenneth Walker (hernia) ends up missing time to start the regular season.

Totals 17 yards Saturday
Thompson rushed three times for 15 yards and caught his lone target for two yards in Saturday's 32-25 preseason loss to the Steelers. He also returned one kickoff for 14 yards.
Analysis: Thompson didn't play on offense until the fourth quarter, as Kenneth Walker, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas all took the field before him. He wasn't effective in his limited reps. The 2019 sixth-round pick is on the roster bubble.

Signing with Seattle
The Seahawks will sign Thompson to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: After spending time on the Tampa Bay and Kansas City practice squads during the 2021 campaign, Thompson will have a chance to carve out a role in Seattle during the offseason. He appeared in 26 games for the Chiefs during his first two seasons in the league, carrying 64 times for 225 yards and touchdowns and adding 16 receptions for 108 yards and another score.

Reverts to practice squad
Thompson reverted to the Chiefs' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Thompson was elevated from the practice squad prior to Sunday's wild-card round win over the Steelers. However, after Darrel Williams (toe) was cleared to take the field, Thompson was inactive for the contest. So long as no further injuries pop up in the Chiefs' backfield, Thompson figures to remain on the practice squad for the rest of the postseason.

Healthy scratch Sunday
Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Steelers, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Analysis: Thompson was elevated from Kansas City's practice squad Saturday, but he won't suit up for the playoff opener since Darrel Williams (toe) is available. Derrick Gore and Jerick McKinnon will serve as the primary backup options behind Williams.

Elevated by Kansas City
The Chiefs elevated Thompson to their active roster Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Thompson joined Kansas City's practice squad Friday after spending the regular season on the Buccaneers' practice squad. He'll now join the Chiefs' active roster ahead of Sunday's wild-card matchup against Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old will provide additional depth in the backfield because Clyde Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) has been ruled out and Darrel Williams (toe) is questionable.

Lands on practice squad
Thompson signed with the Chiefs' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's official transactions log.
Analysis: Thompson was cut from the Buccaneers' practice squad Thursday. He now returns to the franchise that selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) out and Darrel Williams (toe) questionable, there is small chance Thompson could suit up Sunday against the Steelers.

Cut from practice squad
Thompson has been released from the Buccaneers' practice squad.
Analysis: The move frees up a spot for the team's addition of wideout John Brown to the practice squad. Thompson had given the Bucs some added running back depth down the stretch, but he's the odd man out now that Leonard Fournette (hamstring) and Giovani Bernard (hip) appear to be nearing a return to action ahead of Tampa Bay's postseason run.

Signs to Bucs' practice squad
Thompson signed with the Buccaneers' practice squad Thursday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Thompson is a relatively high-profile signing by practice squad standards, considering he logged 26 games of regular-season action with the Chiefs over the last two campaigns, even drawing one start over that span. Thompson lost out on a roster spot this summer due to Kansas City's deep backfield, but the Utah State product will now garner a closer look from the defending champions.

Time with Chiefs at an end
Kansas City waived Thompson on Monday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Thompson failed to reach the 4.0 YPC mark in either of his two seasons with the Chiefs, across which span he logged a total of 26 regular-season appearances. With Jerick McKinnon and Darrel Williams (head) around to provide depth behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle), and Derrick Gore having put together a solid preseason, Thompson's spot on the roster was rendered superfluous. The third-year pro will look for another opportunity elsewhere in the league.

Gets six touches
Thompson rushed three times for 11 yards and caught all three of his targets for 14 yards in Friday night's 28-25 preseason win over the Vikings.
Analysis: Thompson entered the game behind Jerick McKinnon, who finished with five touches for 27 yards. Behind him, though, Derrick Gore ripped off 106 yards on his 11 touches, including a 56-yard touchdown catch. With that added twist to finish the preseason, it'll be very interesting to see who the Chiefs name their third tailback prior to Week 1's opener against the Browns.

Lands on COVID list
The Chiefs placed Thompson on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
Analysis: Thompson hasn't necessarily tested positive for the virus, but he'll need to clear the NFL's health and safety protocols before rejoining the team. Big game in expanded role
Thompson rushed 14 times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught all seven of his targets for 65 yards and another score in Sunday's 38-21 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Thompson made the most of his opportunity to start with both Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle) and Le'Veon Bell (knee) not featuring Sunday. The second-year pro notched his first touchdown of the campaign with a one-yard rush during the second quarter, then hauled in an eight-yard pass to score in the fourth. Expected to see expanded workload
Though Le'Veon Bell (knee) is expected to suit up Sunday against the Chargers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggests that Thompson "is slated to get the bulk" of Kansas City's carries.
Analysis: The report suggests that if Bell does play Sunday, "it'll be very little." With Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle) already ruled out and Bell seemingly on track to be limited, it looks like Thompson will see expanded opportunities in Week 17, with Kansas City having clinched the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed. No offensive snaps
Thompson didn't take the field on offense in Sunday's game against the Falcons.
Analysis: Even with Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle) sidelined, Thompson couldn't crack the backfield rotation behind Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams. Barring one of those two sitting out next week's regular-season finale as well, it seems unlikely Thompson will get much usage. However, it seems a somewhat plausible outcome that Thompson will get a little work next week given that the Chiefs have locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Thompson (illness) practiced in full Wednesday, suggesting he's over the illness that sidelined him for last week's win over the Saints.

Falls ill Thursday
Thompson (illness) was unable to participate during Thursday's practice session, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: Le'Veon Bell's mid-October arrival has zapped Thompson's offensive usage over the past two months. The Utah State standout posted three different outings with multiple rush attempts between Weeks 1 and 6, but since that point, he has been handed a carry in just one of the past six games. An absence from Thompson during a Week 15 matchup against the Saints would likely only impact Kansas City in the special-teams realm.

Working on special teams
Thompson didn't play any offensive snaps during Sunday's 22-16 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Thompson has 13 carries for 52 yards this season but hasn't played a single offensive snap since Week 8. The 23-year-old should be limited to special teams while Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams handle the backfield work.

No offensive work against Tampa Bay
Thompson garnered zero offensive snaps and 10 special-teams snaps during Sunday's 27-24 win at Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The 23-year-old has been largely relegated from any offensive role since the Week 7 Chiefs debut of Le'Veon Bell, garnering at least one carry in a game only once (during a 35-9 win against the Jets in Week 8). Thompson has gone three consecutive appearances without fielding a single offensive snap, but there is a chance for him to get involved if Kansas City mounts a sizable lead against the road-underdog Broncos in Week 13.

No offensive role again
Thompson played zero offensive snaps during Sunday's win over Las Vegas.
Analysis: The 23-year-old has exclusively played special teams over the past two contests with the rest of the backfield operating with no issues. Thompson has 13 carries for 52 yards this season and is unlikely to have much of a role while Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Le'Veon Bell remain healthy.

No offensive snaps against Panthers
Thompson played zero offensive snaps and 12 special-teams snaps during Sunday's 33-31 win against Carolina.
Analysis: The usually strong Kansas City ground attack managed only 30 team rushing yards against the Panthers, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire (five carries) and Le'Veon Bell (four carries) being the only running backs involved. Darrel Williams did not have a rushing role, but he did post one catch in the contest at least, relegating Thompson to the No. 4 spot in the KC backfield at the moment.

Gets in on action late
Thompson tallied four carries for three yards and failed to haul in his lone target Sunday versus the Jets.
Analysis: Thompson at least saw the field this week after being labeled inactive for Week 7. However, all of his reps came on the last drive with the contest well in hand, so there is little to glean from his effort Sunday other than he's a depth option should either Clyde Edwards-Helaire or Le'Veon Bell miss time.

Not suiting up Week 7
Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.

Three totes in Week 6
Thompson ran just three times for 17 yards in Monday's win over the Bills.
Analysis: Thompson only took the field for three total snaps, so he's already behind the eight ball in terms of playing time. With Le'Veon Bell set to join the mix as soon as Week 7, there's even less upside to Thompson's prospects moving forward.

Out of game plan against Raiders
Thompson did not garner a single offensive snap during Sunday's 40-32 loss to Las Vegas.
Analysis: That makes two consecutive outings Thompson has gone without an offensive snap, and three games on the season in which the 24-year-old back has been without a carry. So far in limited action, Thompson has offered a much improved 5.3 yards-per-carry average after logging 3.5 YPC as a rookie, but he's been afforded just 1.2 rush attempts per game compared to more than three per game in 2019. Thompson will remain a depth option next Monday night when the Chiefs face Buffalo's top-10 rush defense.

No offensive snaps in Week 4
Thompson didn't take the field on offense during Monday's win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Thompson hasn't seen more than a 19 percent offensive snap share in any of the first four games, but a fumble last week on just six offensive snaps certainly did the second-year back no favors. He's firmly behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams in the pecking order for backfield touches, and that shouldn't change as long as the two ahead of him are healthy and available.

Loses fumbles during MNF win
Thompson registered 11 rushing yards on two carries and lost a fumble during Monday's 34-20 win over the Ravens. He was also targeted twice in the passing game but recorded no receptions.
Analysis: Thompson coughed up the ball on Kansas City's opening possession of the second half, enabling Baltimore to establish a brief stretch of momentum by collecting a field goal and a touchdown on consecutive drives. The second-year back did not register another offensive touch the rest of the way, as Darrel Williams took over sole No. 2 RB duties behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and fielded two carries for six yards while also recording a five-yard catch. Second in backfield snaps
Thompson rushed four times for 21 yards and failed to haul in his lone target Sunday versus the Chargers.
Analysis: Thompson's added work came following Darrel Williams' departure due to an ankle issue, and he made the most of them, averaging 5.25 yards per carry. While the showing doesn't align him with major work in the future, Thompson could continue to slot in as the backup to Clyde Edwards-Helaire if Williams were to miss additional action.

Limited to special teams
Thompson did not take the field on offense during the opener versus the Texans.
Analysis: A sixth-round pick by the Chiefs last season, Thompson managed to hold on to a roster spot behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams possibly due, in part, to his familiarity with the playbook. Regardless, he seems to be the clear No. 3 in the rotation and will presumably be limited to special teams as long as the other two are healthy.

Left in the dust
Thompson is part of a Chiefs backfield that recently added first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire and veteran free agent DeAndre Washington.
Analysis: Translation: the 2019 sixth-round pick will need to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster. Thompson averaged 3.7 yards on 46 touches as a rookie, though he did at least work ahead of LeSean McCoy as Kansas City's No. 2 running back during the playoffs. No room to run in playoffs
Thompson had two carries for seven yards during three postseason appearances with the Chiefs. He also drew two targets, but failed to record a reception.
Analysis: Thompson was relegated to a depth role behind Damien Williams during the Chiefs' postseason run, culminating in a Super Bowl victory over the 49ers in which the rookie was held to zero yards on his lone carry. He didn't find much success on the ground in the regular season either, logging 37 carries for 128 yards and one touchdown across 12 games while hauling in nine of 10 targets for 43 yards. Gets one touch behind Williams
Thompson took one carry for seven yards and failed to catch his lone target in Sunday's 35-24 win over the Titans.
Analysis: LeSean McCoy was a healthy scratch, while Damien Williams led the backfield in carries (17), targets (six) and snap share (85 percent) for a fourth consecutive game. Thompson played 11 offensive snaps (16 percent) in Sunday's victory, and he isn't likely to see much more in the Super Bowl unless Williams suffers an injury.

Minimal Week 17 showing
Thompson collected 17 yards on four carries and reeled in his only target for a loss of four yards in the regular-season finale Sunday versus the Chargers.
Analysis: Thompson's 12 offensive snaps Sunday represent an increase compared to the six he logged against Chicago, but it doesn't exactly position him as a fantasy threat during the postseason. The rookie finished the 2019 regular season with 37 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown, and recorded just nine grabs for 43 yards over the 12 games in which he appeared. With Damien Williams under contract again in 2020, Thompson's immediate fantasy future doesn't appear bright.

Back to reduced role
Thompson rushed just five times for 14 yards Sunday against the Bears.
Analysis: Thompson's snap count took a major hit due to Damien Williams' return to the lineup. Gains 39 yards in victory
Thompson ran for 38 yards on eight carries and recorded a one-yard catch during Sunday's 23-3 win over Denver.
Analysis: Thompson's nine touches tied him with Spencer Ware for most among the team's backs, as the Chiefs found more success throwing than running in Sunday's muckfest. None of Kansas City's backs have really grabbed hold of the lead role during Damien Williams' (ribs) three-game absence, but Thompson has been the most productive of the bunch, averaging 42.0 total yards per game. Expands involvement in Week 14
Thompson rushed four times for seven yards and caught four of his five targets for 36 yards Sunday versus the Patriots.
Analysis: With Damien Williams (ribs) sidelined and Darrel Williams (hamstring) on injured reserve, Thompson has seen a drastic increase in his run, playing north of 20 snaps for the second straight week. The addition of Spencer Ware shallowed Thompson's fantasy upside, and the eventual return of Damien Williams (ribs) could detract further from his value.

Could see role expand
Coach Andy Reid suggested Monday that Thompson could be in line for additional playing time Week 14 against the Patriots with the statuses of Damien Williams (ribs) and Darrel Williams (hamstring) to be determined, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With Damien inactive for the Chiefs' Week 13 win over the Raiders and Darrel exiting the contest early, Thompson picked up his most extensive playing time to date. The rookie played 24 of the Chiefs' 67 offensive snaps (36 percent), finishing with 44 yards and his first career touchdown on 11 carries. Steps up in battered backfield
Thompson carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 40-9 rout of the Raiders.
Analysis: The rookie saw his first extended action of the season and wound up leading the Chiefs in carries and rushing yards, as Damien Williams (ribs) was inactive and Darrel Williams (hamstring) exited the game early. Thompson's longest gain went for only nine yards, however, and even if both Williamses are sidelined next week, his lack of explosiveness could keep him in a timeshare with LeSean McCoy in a tough matchup with the Patriots' league-leading defense.

Healthy scratch for MNF
Thompson (coach's decision) is a healthy inactive for Monday's showdown against the Chargers, BJ Kissel of the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: This news is a bit surprising, considering Thompson was active last week and saw two touches in the game. The disappointing season continues for the 22-year-old, as he's firmly been established at the bottom of the Chiefs' running back depth chart. In Thompson's stead, the team will roll with Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and LeSean McCoy.

Two touches in Week 10
Thompson rushed just once for minus-1 yard and caught his only target for eight yards Sunday versus the Titans.

Chance to emerge
Thompson may work into the running back rotation with LeSean McCoy inactive in Week 10 against the Titans, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With McCoy a surprise healthy scratch, Damien Williams is likely set to emerge as the lead back for the team. However, Thompson could also be a beneficiary with an increased role in the offensive gameplan. The rookie has failed to appear for more than five offensive snaps in any game this season and has gained only 11 total yards in six contests.
