Let go by Pittsburgh
The Steelers waived Sternberger on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Sternberger joined the Steelers' practice squad in November of last year and spent the rest of the season on the team's practice squad before he signed a futures deal in January. The 2019 third-round pick hasn't appeared in an NFL regular-season game since 2020, when he caught 12 of 15 targets for 114 yards and one score across 12 appearances with Green Bay.

Back with Steelers for 2022
The Steelers signed Sternberger to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: The tight end joined the Steelers' practice squad in November after being released by the Packers earlier in the season, but he wasn't active for any contests. Sternberger will now return to the Steelers in 2022 and look to carve out a greater role heading into his fourth season in the NFL.

Signs with practice squad
Sternberger signed with the Steelers' practice squad Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Sternberger was selected in the third round of the 2019 Draft by the Packers, appearing in a total of 18 games for them. In 2020 he recorded 12 catches on 15 targets for 114 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. Before the 2021 season began, Sternberger was waived by the Packers and has since spent time with Seattle and Washington. With Eric Ebron (knee) likely to miss extended time, Sternberger will provide emergency tight end depth for the Steelers from the practice squad.

Waived by WFT
Sternberger was waived by Washington on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 25-year-old was added to the team Oct. 6 after Logan Thomas (hamstring) was place on injured reserve but failed to play in any contests. With Thomas likely returning following Washington's bye in Week 9, they no longer need Sternberger. The tight end will either be claimed by another team, moved to the practice squad or out right released.

Signs with Washington
Washington signed Sternberger from Seattle's practice squad Wednesday, independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reports.
Analysis: Sternberger spent two weeks on the Seahawks' practice squad after he was waived by the Packers in mid-September, and he'll now serve as depth at tight end for Washington after Logan Thomas (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve. The 25-year-old appeared in 12 games for Green Bay last year and hauled in 12 of his 15 targets for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Links up with Seattle
Sternberger was signed to the Seahawks' practice squad Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 2019 third-round pick passed through waivers unclaimed after being let go by the Packers on Tuesday, but he found a new home with the Seahawks. Sternberger caught 12 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown in 12 games during 2020, and he was suspended for the first two games of this season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Clears waivers
Sternberger went unclaimed on waivers Wednesday and is now a free agent, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Sternberger has concluded his two-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, making him eligible to suit up for game action as soon as he finds a new home in the league. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers will attempt to re-sign Sternberger to their practice squad, but the 2019 third-round pick could still end up finding an opportunity on a 53-man roster with another club.

Time in Green Bay comes to end
Sternberger (suspension) will be waived by the Packers on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Sternberger opened the 2021 season with a two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and rather than add him back to the active roster, the Packers are opting to send the 2019 third-round pick to waivers. Across 18 career games in Green Bay the tight end only racked up 12 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown, and Robert Tonyan is entrenched as the team's top option at the position. A fresh start could be the best scenario for Sternberger's prospects.

Remains with Packers for now
Sternberger made the Packers' roster but will open the season on the reserve/suspended list.
Analysis: With Sternberger having an inconsistent training camp and facing a two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the Packers could have opted to release him on cut-down day. However, with the team able to place him on the suspended list without occupying a roster spot, they decided to keep him around for the time being. Finds paydirt in preseason game
Sternberger was targeted three times and caught two passes for five yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets.
Analysis: Sternberger hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Benkert in the second quarter of Saturday's contest, but he also mishandled a third-down pass earlier in the game that would have given the Packers a first down, so it was not the clean showing he could have used to secure a spot on the roster. Sternberger will have one more chance to impress before the Packers decide to keep him around -- and place him on the suspended list to start the season -- or move on.

Could be on roster bubble
Sternberger (suspension) could be on the roster bubble, according to Bill Huber of PackerCentral.com.
Analysis: Sternberger caught three passes for 35 yards in the Packers' preseason opener against the Texans and hauled in a 34-yard pass from Jordan Love on the Packers' only scoring drive of the night. However, tight ends coach Justin Outten was not complimentary when asked about Sternberger on Sunday and said the team still needs to see more consistency from the player. Handed two-game ban
Sternberger was suspended for the first two games of the 2021 season Thursday for violating the league's substance abuse policy, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: According to Sternberger's personal twitter account, the suspension stems from an incident in 2020. The Texas A&M product recorded just 12 catches last year, and he's destined for a depth role again in 2021 behind Robert Tonyan. Sternberger will be eligible to return to the team following Week 2's Monday night clash with Detroit.

Season cut short by injury
Sternberger caught 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown over 12 regular-season games with the Packers in 2020.
Analysis: Sternberger played about 30 percent of the snaps on a per-game basis for the first three quarters of the season, but he went out with a head injury in early December, and he was a healthy scratch the rest of the way after clearing the concussion protocol in early January. He hasn't quite given the Packers the production they were looking for when they selected him in the third round in 2019, but he has also dealt with injuries in both his seasons as a pro. Inactive Sunday
Sternberger (coach's decision) will be inactive for Saturday's matchup with the Rams, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Sternberger was a healthy scratch in the Packers' regular-season finale after clearing concussion protocol. Green Bay is opting to continue rolling with Dominique Dafney as its No. 3 tight end behind Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis. As a result, Sternberger will watch the team's playoff matchup from the sidelines.

Healthy scratch Sunday
Sternberger (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Analysis: The 24-year-old cleared the concussion protocol this week after missing the past three games, but he still ended up a healthy scratch for the final game of the regular season. Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis and Dominique Dafney are Green Bay's three active tight ends Sunday.

Clears concussion protocol
Sternberger (concussion) won't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Bears, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Analysis: Sternberger has cleared the league's five-step concussion protocol and will return to action after a three-game absence. Robert Tonyan has established himself as the top tight end in Green Bay's offense. Sternberger has yet to play more than 28 snaps in a game as a result.

Remains limited in practice
Sternberger (concussion) was limited during Thursday's practice session.
Analysis: Since sustaining his concussion Dec. 6 during a win over Philadelphia, Sternberger has missed three consecutive games. The 24-year-old has proven capable of submitting consecutive limited sessions between Wednesday and Thursday, however, a stark improvement compared to last week, when he sat out all three of the Packers' practices. He'll still have to clear league concussion protocol, but Sternberger is trending in the right direction heading into a Sunday late afternoon kickoff at Chicago.

Sternberger (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Titans, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.

Still out Thursday
Sternberger (concussion/illness) was a non-participant during Thursday's practice session, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Sternberger's concussion has lingered, and an inability to gain practice clearance is beginning to threaten his Week 16 availability. The Texas A&M product initially sustained his head injury Dec. 6 during a win over the Eagles. If he's unable to rally for a Sunday night matchup against Tennessee, it would mean a third consecutive absence from Sternberger and likely increased opportunities for breakout tight end Robert Tonyan.

Still not practicing
Sternberger (concussion/illness) did not practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Sternberger has missed back-to-back games while working through the concussion protocol, and he's now also dealing with an undisclosed ailment. Top tight end Robert Tonyan could see a slight uptick in targets during Sunday's game against the Titans if Sternberger isn't cleared to suit up.

Not present at Tuesday's practice
Sternberger (concussion) wasn't present at Tuesday's practice, Olivia Reiner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Sternberger has missed two games, and he remains in the league's five-step concussion protocol. The second-year tight end will need to take the field by Friday to have a chance to play Sunday against the Titans. The Packers will reveal an official practice report when they take the field Wednesday that should signal if Sternberger has made any progress.

Ruled out for Week 15
The Packers list Sternberger (concussion) as out for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Wes Hodkiewicz of Green Bay's official site reports.
Analysis: Sternberger remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and wasn't able to practice in any fashion Tuesday through Thursday, so his absence for the Packers' Week 15 game isn't too surprising in that context. With Sternberger out of the picture, Robert Tonyan could draw an extra target or two as the team's clear top pass-catching tight end, while blocking specialist Marcedes Lewis may see an uptick in his overall snaps.

Sternberger (concussion) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's practice estimate.
Analysis: Sternberger is trending in the wrong direction to begin the week. He has two more practice sessions to take the field and have a chance to play in Saturday's matchup against the Panthers. Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis will handle nearly all the tight end reps if Sternberger misses a second straight game, and Dominique Dafney should rotate in as well.

Sternberger (concussion) has been ruled out of Sunday's game versus the Lions, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Sternberger didn't practice all week and will miss his first game of the season. The second-year tight end will aim to return to practice next week with hopes of playing against the Panthers on Dec. 19. Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis are the only two tight ends currently on the active roster, but the Packers may call up Dominique Dafney from the practice squad again.

Still missing time
Sternberger (concussion) didn't suit up in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Sternberger missed his second straight practice Thursday, as he appears in jeopardy of missing Week 14. With both Sternberger and Marcedes Lewis (knee) missing practice Thursday, Robert Tonyan is currently the only healthy tight end on the roster.

Sternberger didn't participate in Wednesday's practice due to a concussion.

Three receptions in Week 11 loss
Sternberger was targeted three times and caught three passes for 23 yards in Sunday's loss to the Colts.
Analysis: Sternberger was on the field for just 16 snaps Sunday, but that was enough for him to tie the career-high three receptions he recorded in both Weeks 3 and 8 of this season. He's made strides in his second season, but he remains well behind Robert Tonyan on the depth chart and also played fewer snaps than fellow tight end Marcedes Lewis in five of the last six contests.

Momentum comes to halt
Sternberger caught his lone target for a one-yard gain in Thursday's 34-17 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: Sternberger's positive momentum hit a wall Thursday, as he and the rest of the Packers tight ends were afterthoughts in the Week 9 game plan. He did play at least 27 percent of the snaps for the fifth time in six games, but Sternberger hasn't been on the field for more than 37 percent of the plays in any game this season.

Sets career high in receiving yards
Sternberger caught three passes for a career-high 46 yards in Sunday's loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: One week after scoring the first regular-season touchdown of his career Sternberger set a new career high in single-game receiving yards. He also played a career-high 28 snaps and -- at least for fantasy purposes -- seems to have pulled ahead of Marcedes Lewis in the Packers' tight end hierarchy. Finds end zone in Week 7
Sternberger hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass on his lone target in Sunday's 35-20 victory over the Texans.
Analysis: Sternberger notched the first regular-season touchdown of his career and was the only Green Bay tight end to find pay dirt in Sunday's contest, but he finished third at his position in snaps and did not see another pass in his direction. While Sternberger was on the field for at least 30 percent of the snaps three times over the Packers' last four games, expect him and Marcedes Lewis to continue playing complementary roles behind top tight end Robert Tonyan.

Analysis: Sternberger collected the first, second and third catches of his career Week 3 in a win against the Saints, after failing to record a reception over his first eight NFL appearances. Robert Tonyan had a monstrous night at tight end for the Packers with six receptions, 98 yards and three touchdowns against Atlanta, but Sternberger wasn't able to get in on any of the offensive production this time around. Hauls in all three targets
Sternberger was targeted three times in Sunday's 37-30 victory over the Saints and finished with three receptions for 36 yards.
Analysis: Sternberger atoned for a couple Week 2 drops by hauling in all three passes in his direction one week later. He finished third among Packers skill players in receiving yards Sunday and was on the field for a season-high 32 percent of the offensive snaps, but he remains only part of the mix behind top tight end Robert Tonyan.

Struggles with drops
Sternberger was targeted once but did not catch a pass in Sunday's victory over the Lions.
Analysis: Sternberger received a few extra snaps Sunday with fellow tight end Josiah Deguara (shin) sidelined, but he could not capitalize on the added opportunities, dropping his only official target and also dropping another pass on a play that was nullified by a penalty. He is listed third alongside Deguara on the Packers' depth chart, but after two weeks Sternberger is seemingly the fourth option among the team's tight ends.

Bit role Week 1
Sternberger was targeted once but did not catch a pass in Sunday's 43-34 victory over the Vikings.
Analysis: Sternberger drew one of only two passes Aaron Rodgers threw to his tight ends in Sunday's game, but he played only a bit role Week 1, finishing a distant fourth among Packers tight ends in snaps. The team thought enough of Sternberger to draft him in the third round in 2019, but he missed most of his rookie season with an ankle injury and still has not found his niche in the offense.

Could be stuck in backup role
Sternberger may not begin the season as Green Bay's No. 1 tight end job, with Robert Tonyan emerging as an option to serve as the Packers' top pass catcher at the position, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: A 2019 third-round pick, Sternberger barely played as rookie before scoring a touchdown in the playoffs. He looked like a dark-horse breakout candidate earlier this summer, but a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list kept him away from the Packers for the first two and half weeks of August, and he apparently hasn't made a strong impression since returning. This doesn't mean Tonyan will handle the pass-catching role all season, but it's at least a possibility for Week 1 at Minnesota.

Returns to practice
Sternberger was removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list for Monday's practice, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The second-year pro was placed on the list at the end of July, missing nearly three weeks of team activities. Even so, Sternberger is the favorite to operate as Green Bay's top pass catcher at tight end, potentially replacing Jimmy Graham. The 2019 third-round pick barely played as a rookie, but he did have 39 offensive snaps and a TD reception in two playoff games.

Robert Tonyan could also see added opportunities in 2020, but Sternberger, who Green Bay selected 75th overall in last year's NFL Draft, is viewed by Larry McCarren of the Packers' official site as a player with the skills to move into a more prominent pass-catching role. Ends season on high note
Sternberger appeared in six regular-season games during his rookie season and did not catch a pass while being targeted only once. He did tally three receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown over two postseason games, though.
Analysis: Sternberger got a late start to his career after missing the first eight games of the season with an ankle injury, and he played mostly a bit role after that. He did end the season on a high note, playing a career-high 28 offensive snaps in the Packers' divisional-round victory and finding pay dirt for the first time in the NFC Championship Game. Analysis: Sternberger has now appeared in five games since being activated from injured reserve, but he is still looking for his first career reception. Sternberger was targeted for the first time in his career but did not catch a pass in Sunday's victory over Washington.

It nearly resulted in his first touchdown as the pass was thrown into the end zone, but he and quarterback Aaron Rodgers couldn't connect.
