Lands on IR
Smith (neck) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: The report indicates Smith was never able to shed the concussion which he sustained in Week 7, although it's quite possible the second-year running back could simply be dealing with concussion symptoms and a lingering neck injury. With Smith's 2019 season now over, Brian Hill is expected to continue operating as the No. 2 running back behind Devonta Freeman.

Won't face Saints
Smith (neck) will not play in Sunday's game against the Saints, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: A Week 9 bye allowed Smith to clear the concussion protocol, but he didn't have enough time to recover from his neck injury. He was held out of practice throughout the week, leaving his availability beyond Sunday looking murky. Brian Hill served as the Falcons' No. 2 running back behind Devonta Freeman in a 27-20 loss to the Seahawks back in Week 8.

Misses practice with neck injury
Smith has cleared the concussion protocol, but a neck injury kept him out of Thursday's practice, the Falcons' official website reports.
Analysis: A bye week allowed Smith to recover from his concussion, but a second straight missed practice suggests his neck is still a significant concern. Another absence Friday likely would leave Brian Hill as the No. 2 running back for Sunday's game in New Orleans against a red-hot Saints defense. Devonta Freeman played 79 percent of snaps in the final game before a Week 9 bye, taking 13 carries for 39 yards and eight catches for 63 yards in a 27-20 loss to Seattle.

Logs another absence
Smith (neck) did not participate in Thursday's practice, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Coming out of a bye week, Smith has cleared the concussion protocol but still needs to recover from a neck injury. An absence for Sunday's game in New Orleans would leave Brian Hill as the likely No. 2 running back behind Devonta Freeman.

Over concussion, has neck injury
Smith didn't practice Wednesday due to a neck injury.
Analysis: Smith sat out the Falcons' last game Week 8 due to a concussion, but despite getting through the protocol for head injuries with the benefit of the team's bye week, he's dealing with a neck issue at the moment, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. If he's unable to get healthy for Sunday's contest at New Orleans, Brian Hill would be the prime candidate to serve as the top change-of-pace option to starting running back Devonta Freeman.

Taking seat Sunday
Smith (concussion/neck) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Seahawks.
Analysis: Ruled out six days ago as a result of a concussion and a neck injury, Smith will yield reserve running back duties to the likes of Brian Hill and Kenjon Barner behind starter Devonta Freeman. The Falcons have a bye Week 9, which will give Smith plenty of time to work his way through the protocol for head injuries.

Unable to practice Wednesday
Smith (concussion) did not practice Wednesday, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Smith suffered a head injury Week 7 against the Rams. He'll need to fully clear the five-step concussion protocol before retaking the field and has already been ruled out for Sunday's tilt against the Seahawks, per D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As long as Smith is unable to go, the Falcons will rely on Brian Hill, Kenjon Barner and Qadree Ollison to provide depth behind Devonta Freeman.

Ruled out Week 8 with concussion
Coach Dan Quinn said that Smith (head/neck) has entered the NFL's concussion protocol and has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Smith was removed from the Falcons' Week 7 loss to the Rams with what were termed a head and neck injury, but follow-up tests revealed that the running back sustained a concussion. The Falcons apparently weren't confident in Smith's ability to pass through the five-step protocol by next weekend, so he'll be sidelined for the first time this season as a result. Smith's absence leaves Brian Hill, Kenjon Barner and Qadree Ollison as the remaining depth options behind lead back Devonta Freeman.

Won't return Sunday
Smith won't return to Sunday's contest versus the Rams due to a head and neck issue, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.
Analysis: With Smith ruled out, the Falcons will ride Devonta Freeman out of the backfield. Meanwhile, reserve running backs Kenjon Barner and Brian Hill should have opportunities to make an impact on offense.

Getting checked for head injury
Smith was removed from Sunday's game versus the Rams to be evaluated for a head injury, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Smith remained on the turf late in the first quarter after failing to haul in his only target to that point in the contest. If he's diagnosed with a concussion, Kenjon Barner and Brian Hill are on hand to take on any RB reps that don't go to lead back Devonta Freeman.

Minimal impact in limited role
Smith ran for six yards on three carries and returned two kickoffs for 59 yards during Sunday's 34-33 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: Game flow did not trend in Smith's favor, as the Falcons fell into a three-possession hole in the third quarter and were forced to throw in an effort to ignite a late comeback. Smith garnered six targets in Week 5 against Houston but otherwise has only exceeded four targets in a single game once in his 20-game NFL career. Up next, Atlanta faces a Rams defense that contained a dominant 49ers ground attack to just 2.4 yards per carry Sunday.

Big-time producer in passing game
Smith ran for 19 yards on five carries, while adding six catches for 45 receiving yards during Sunday's 53-32 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: The second-year back had seen a regression in his running game role since suffering a concussion Sept. 22 against Indianapolis, fielding three combined carries between Weeks 3 and 4. Sunday against Houston, he was back to a viable fantasy workload, garnering his second-highest total of rush attempts this season while benefiting from a career-high six targets. Notches first score of 2019
Smith accounted for 11 yards and a touchdown on two carries, and caught two of four targets for 20 receiving yards during Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Titans.
Analysis: The Atlanta ground attack has been dormant through the first four weeks of the regular season, with the team accounting for a collective 71.3 rushing yards per game. Smith individually has seen marked improvement to his rushing efficiency in a limited sample size, with his yards-per-carry average improving to 5.7 from the 3.5 mark he established as a rookie. Cleared from concussion protocol
Smith (concussion) will play in Sunday's game against the Titans, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Smith only needed a few days to pass through the concussion protocol, returning to practice as a limited participant Thursday before shedding his non-contact jersey Friday. He's set for his usual role splitting backfield work with Devonta Freeman. Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports that the team gave Smith some work on kickoff returns during Friday's practice, hoping to find a short-term replacement for Kenjon Barner (out - concussion/knee).

Practices without no-contact jersey
Smith (concussion) practiced Friday without a non-contact jersey, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Smith did not practice Wednesday and wore a non-contact jersey Thursday after suffering a concussion last week, but it appears he made even more progress Friday. No announcement has been made yet about Smith clearing the concussion protocol, but he appears to be trending in that direction. Smith returned kicks at Friday's practice, so if he plays Sunday, he could see action in that role if teammate Kenjon Barner (concussion/knee) is unable to go.

Puts in limited session
Smith (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: According to Jason Butt of The Athletic, Smith was spotted in a black no-contact jersey during the session, but the fact that he put in some on-field work Thursday after being a non-participant in practice a day earlier suggests he's progressing well from the concussion. Regardless of what he's able to do at the Falcons' final practice of the week Friday, Smith will need to receive clearance from an independent neurologist in order to suit up Sunday against the Titans.

Smith (concussion) wore a black non-contact jersey at Thursday's practice, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.

Smith (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Smith was forced out of the Week 3 loss to the Colts and will need to fully clear the league's protocol for head injuries before returning to game action. Smith has been diagnosed with a concussion and won't return to Sunday's contest at Indianapolis, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.
Analysis: Smith went down on the Falcons' first possession of the game, leaving the backfield with just two active bodies (Devonta Freeman and Kenjon Barner). If he's unable to get out of the protocol for head injuries in time for a Week 4 matchup with the Titans, Atlanta will be forced to activate rookie Qadree Ollison and/or Brian Hill for the first time this season.

Peels off 28-yard scamper
Smith ran for 32 yards on four carries, adding two receptions for 13 yards during Sunday's 24-20 win against the Eagles.
Analysis: Outside of a 28-yard rush late in the third quarter, Smith averaged 1.3 yards on his other three carries against an Eagles defense that has stifled opponents to a meager 85 total rushing yards through Week 2. Be that as it may, Smith's efficiency has skyrocketed in the early going of his sophomore campaign, with his per-carry average increasing from 3.5 as a rookie, to 6.3 yards thus far in 2019. Efficient Week 1 outing
Smith ran for 31 yards on six carries, and accounted for a nine-yard reception during Sunday's 28-12 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: A lack of rushing efficiency has been the lone glaring flaw on Smith's resume to this point, as the second-year back has demonstrated proficiency in the passing game (27 receptions for 152 yards as a rookie), while reaching the end zone seven times on 124 preseason and regular-season carries. Gets active tag Sunday
Smith is one of three active running backs on the Falcons' roster Sunday at Minnesota, Will McFadden of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The Falcons opted to hold out Qadree Ollison and Brian Hill, leaving Smith, Devonta Freeman and Kenjon Barner as the sole available RBs. Freeman no doubt will lead the way, but this backfield has been notable for its propensity for two relevant options. With Freeman sidelined for much of last season, Smith served as the No. 2 to the departed Tevin Coleman, yet he averaged 8.4 touches per game, 3.5 yards per carry and 4.8 yards per target in 14 contests.

Scores in third straight game
Smith accounted for 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries, adding one catch for nine yards during Thursday's 19-7 preseason loss to Washington.
Analysis: The second-year back has now hit paydirt in three of four exhibition outings after enduring a six-game touchdown slump to round out 2018. Concern is centered around his fantasy value being touchdown-dependent, as he's not an elite option out of the backfield in the passing game and ranks well behind second-string competitors Qadree Ollison and Brian Hill with 2.88 yards per carry this preseason.

Smith garnered 13 yards and a touchdown on five rushing attempts and caught all three of his targets for 45 yards during Thursday's 22-10 loss to the Jets in Week 2 of preseason.

Reaches end zone in preseason loss
Smith collected seven yards and a touchdown on four rush attempts during Thursday's 34-27 loss to Miami.
Analysis: Thursday night's performance was a protypical outing for Smith, as he proved to be relatively inefficient on a per-carry basis but salvaged a respectable outing by rumbling his way into the end zone on a goal-line rush. Last year he had a touchdown in four games, but he averaged a modest 3.9 yards per carry in those contests. Four touches in HOF game
Smith rushed three times for six yards and brought in his only target for six yards in the Falcons' 14-10 preseason loss to the Broncos on Thursday.
Analysis: Smith couldn't get much going on the ground while in the contest, gaining just two total yards on two of his three carries. The 2018 fourth-round pick is primarily battling fellow incumbent Brian Hill and rookie Qadree Ollison for depth chart slotting behind Devonta Freeman, and he'll presumably get a boost in touches in forthcoming exhibitions after seeing Hill outpace him by eight carries Thursday.

Needs to battle rookie for work
The Falcons used a fifth-round pick (No. 152 overall) on Qadree Ollison to join Smith and Devonta Freeman in the backfield, Will McFadden of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: There was little question Atlanta would add backfield depth after losing Tevin Coleman to the 49ers in March. There's still a nice opportunity for Smith to earn the No. 2 job in a prolific offense, though he didn't make the best case for himself last season when he averaged 3.5 yards on 90 carries and 5.6 yards on 27 receptions. Not seen as Coleman's replacement
Head coach Dan Quinn stopped short of naming Smith as Tevin Coleman's replacement, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "He certainly has shown that he's capable of [replacing Coleman], but if that (Coleman leaving in free agency) takes place, there will definitely be other guys that we put into the mix to compete with (Smith)," Quinn said Wednesday at the NFL Combine.
Analysis: This is not what dynasty owners wanted to hear, but there are definitely reasons Quinn feels that way. For starters, Smith topped four yards per carry in just four of 14 appearances as a rookie last season and didn't log a single carry of 20-plus yards over 90 attempts. He wasn't much of a receiving threat, either, averaging just 4.7 yards per target and 5.6 yards per catch. Nearly finished rehab
Smith (knee) is almost back to 100 percent health and doesn't expect to have any limitations during the offseason, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Smith had arthroscopic surgery Dec. 19 to address a meniscus issue in his left knee and missed the final two weeks of his rookie campaign. He finished the year with 90 carries for 315 yards (3.5 average) and four touchdowns, adding 27 catches for 152 yards on 32 targets (4.8 YPT). Analysis: Coach Dan Quinn confirmed Thursday that Smith's surgery went according to plan and added that the 23-year-old should be ready to go for the start of the Falcons' offseason program. Though he only averaged 3.5 yards per carry over 14 appearances in his rookie campaign, Smith showed a nose for the end zone (four touchdowns) and some pass-catching upside (27 receptions on 32 targets for 152 yards). Smith is slated for surgery to repair meniscus damage in his left knee, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports. As a result, the Falcons will place Smith on injured reserve, per Will McFadden of the team's official site.
Analysis: Smith dealt with neck and knee injuries in preparation for Sunday's eventual 40-14 win against the Cardinals, aggravating the latter enough that it'll end his season. Analysis: Smith kicked off the week with a limited listing, so bumping up to an uncapped practice gives him the all-clear to continue the smaller side of a timeshare with Tevin Coleman out of the Falcons backfield. Utilizing a season-high 32 offensive snaps Week 14 against an exploitable Packers defense, he notched career bests in touches (14) and yards from scrimmage (74). Totals 74 scrimmage yards
Smith had 11 carries for 60 yards and caught three of four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Smith tied his highest carry and yardage totals of the season as he out-touched Tevin Coleman out of the backfield for the second straight week. A more productive afternoon may have been in store, but the Falcons fell behind 34-7 in the third quarter and mostly abandoned the run thereafter. Bottled up by Baltimore
Smith rushed for 22 yards on seven carries and added a reception that did not gain yardage during Sunday's 26-16 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: Heading into Atlanta's recent four-game losing streak, the rookie had scored in four of his previous five games. During Atlanta's recent struggles, the rookie back has not found the end zone, has not reached 30 total yards in a game, and is averaging just 2.1 yards per carry. The good news, if there is any, is that Smith ended Sunday with one more carry than starter Tevin Coleman. Smith amounted zero rushing yards on four carries, adding two receptions for seven yards during Thursday's 31-17 loss to New Orleans.
Analysis: Outside of a 10-carry, 60-yard outing against Washington on Nov. 4, Smith has averaged a meager 2.6 yards per rush this season. A spree of four touchdowns between Week 4 and Week 8 has kept Smith as a top-50 fantasy producer at the position in most formats, but he's been brutal of late with 21 combined rushing yards over his past three games (14 attempts), and no more than 15 receiving yards in any of those contests. Rushing inefficiency persists
Smith managed 10 yards on six carries, adding two receptions for 12 yards during a 22-19 loss to Dallas on Sunday.
Analysis: Smith has been notably inefficient as a ball carrier, averaging fewer than 3.4 yards per carry on the season, and only breaking 2.8 yards per attempt three times in 10 outings. The rookie running back's upside comes by way of frequent red-zone usage, as he entered Week 11 fielding 45.5 percent of Atlanta red-zone carries (compared to Tevin Coleman's 39.4 percent). Smith has a reasonable shot at falling into the end zone when Atlanta travels to takes on New Orleans Thursday, facing a bottom-five…read more

Held in check during Week 10 loss
Smith was contained to 11 rushing yards on four carries but added four receptions for 15 yards during Sunday's 28-16 loss to the Browns.
Analysis: Smith's fantasy value has been salvaged by way of the touchdown (four scores this year, all coming from inside the 15-yard line), but his rushing efficiency has been staggeringly poor. The rookie out of Southern Miss has been held to fewer than three yards per carry in five of his past seven outings, and he's averaging worse than 3.6 yards per rush overall on the season. Scores in win
Smith ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and added a six-yard catch during Sunday's 38-14 win over Washington.
Analysis: Smith added to Atlanta's lead midway through the second quarter, taking a draw and hurdling a defender for a 12-yard touchdown. The rookie came into Sunday averaging just three yards per carry but set career highs in yardage on Sunday and scored for the fourth time in the last five games. The Falcons will rely on him next Sunday against a Cleveland defense that has harassed opposing passers but is giving up 4.6 yards per rush.
