Falters in contract year
Davis recorded 46 tackles, a half-sack and two forced fumbles over 14 games in 2020.
Analysis: It's been quite a tumble for the 2017 first-round pick who appeared to be the Lions' middle linebacker of the future as recently as 2018. After a high-ankle sprain derailed Davis's 2019 campaign, the 2020 season brought him a new defensive coordinator and position coach, not to mention a new head coach and GM by season's end. The latter changes helped lead Davis to see less than 40 percent of the defensive snaps in 10 of 14 games in 2020, which, in turn, ultimately led to career lows across the…read more

Produces nine tackles
Davis made nine tackles (four solo) in Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Davis made his fourth start of the season, but he only played 51 percent of the snaps on defense. Nevertheless, the 2017 first-round pick posted a season high in tackles, bringing his 2020 total to 44 stops. Whether he starts in Week 17 against the Vikings likely depends on if Jamie Collins (neck) is cleared to play.

Clear of knee injury
Davis (knee) does not carry an injury designation for Thursday's game against the Texans, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Analysis: Davis was limited in practice due to his lingering knee injury this week, but he's all clear to suit up Thanksgiving Day. The 2017 first-round pick normally handles a rotational role in Detroit's linebacker corps.

Returns to injury report
Davis (knee) was a limited participant on Monday's practice estimate, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Analysis: Davis logged a trio of limited practices before ultimately suiting up in Sunday's loss to the Panthers. He'll likely follow a similar regimen this week leading up to Thursday's game against the Texans. The 2017 first-round pick hasn't started since Week 2, and his 31 percent snap share in Week 11 was his highest since that outing.

Healthy enough to face Panthers
Davis (knee) is active heading into Sunday's matchup against Carolina.
Analysis: Davis was held to limited participation throughout the practice week, but he's now been cleared for his first appearance since Nov. 1. The linebacker missed Week 9 because of a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list and Week 10 due to a knee issue. He's back at his starting middle linebacker spot for a matchup against the Panthers' 21st-ranked scoring offense.

Questionable after limited practice
Davis (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Analysis: Davis has been limited in practice all week after missing last week's game with the injury, but Detroit will be hoping to get him back Sunday. The middle linebacker registered five tackles apiece in each of the season's first two games but hasn't been able to reach that mark since.

Begins week with limited practice
Davis (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: This injury popped up last week and caused Davis to be limited for the final two practices of the week, and he was ultimately inactive against Washington. He may be headed for a similar fate this week, but he has two more practices to upgrade to full participation. Jahlani Tavai stands to benefit the most if Davis can't play Sunday against the Panthers.

Sidelined for Week 10
Davis (knee) is officially inactive for Sunday's contest against Washington.
Analysis: Davis saw his practice reps cut short this week with the knee issue, and he was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier in the week, so he was unable to suit up in game action. With the Florida product sidelined, look for Jahlani Tavai to step into his rotational linebacker role for Sunday's game.

Questionable with knee injury
Davis (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Washington, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Davis was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier this week, but the linebacker is battling an unrelated knee injury. Look for Davis to play a rotational linebacker role if he's able to suit up.

Rejoins active roster
Davis (undisclosed) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.
Analysis: Davis either tested positive for COVID-19 or came in close contact with an infected individual at the start of November, but he's now been cleared to rejoin the team. The 27-year-old has fallen into a rotational role and hasn't played over 30 percent of defensive snaps since Week 2,

Shifts to COVID list
Davis was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: It's unclear if Davis contracted the virus himself or was in close contact with an infected individual, but either way he'll be out of action until further notice. Even if he doesn't have COVID-19, the 24-year-old already may be unavailable for Sunday's game at Minnesota, depending on the exact timing of his close contact. He's played only 45 defensive snaps in the three games since Detroit's bye in Week 5.

Off to slow start
Davis totaled four tackles during Sunday's 42-21 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: There was hope for more effective play from Davis in 2020 after he bulked up over the offseason, but the results haven't been pretty through two games into the 2020 season. On Sunday, Davis' 46 snaps significantly trailed that of Jahlani Tavai (59), and Davis saw three missed tackles go on his ledger while allowing both pass attempts with him in primary coverage to be completed, per Pro Football Focus. Any hope of Davis become an IDP factor is seemingly a pipe dream at this point.

Bulks up
Davis significantly bulked up this offseason, Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: This isn't an eye-rolling "best shape of his life" claim, as Davis reportedly went from 227 pounds at 14 percent body fat to 248 pounds at 9.8 percent body fat. After the Lions declined to pick up the fifth-year option on his contract this offseason, this body transformation could be huge for Davis as he hopes to fend off the likes of Jahlani Tavai, Christian Jones, and Reggie Ragland for snaps beside prized offseason signing Jamie Collins. However, Davis was already a liability on passing…read more

Backed by Patricia
Davis (ankle) remains in Detroit's plans despite the team declining to pick up his fifth-year option, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. "I think JD is a cornerstone of what we're trying to do, and he's in those big-picture plans of where we're trying to go," head coach Matt Patricia said during a recent video call with reporters.
Analysis: After bringing in two notable free-agent linebackers this offseason, Detroit officially declined to pick up Davis' fifth-year option this month. However, Patricia doesn't make it seem as if the writing is on the wall for Davis' time in Detroit despite a down 2019 season. Instead, the team is probably just unwilling to pay over $10 million for Davis' services in 2021, preferring to instead work out a long-term deal with a lesser cap hit. While it remains to be seen to what extent Jamie Collins'…read more

Fifth-year option declined
The Lions are expected to decline the fifth-year option on Davis' (ankle) contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Davis, a 2017 first-round pick, would be on the books for over $10 million in 2021 if the team opted to pick up his option. Ultimately, Detroit has decided to err on the side of caution and avoid that commitment. The 24-year-old has recorded 259 tackles (176 solo), 10.0 sacks, nine passes defensed, one pick and five forced fumbles across 41 games through three years in Detroit.

Lions unsure on fifth-year option
GM Bob Quinn said the Lions have yet to make a decision on whether pick up Davis' (ankle) fifth-year option for 2021, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: The 24-year-old played in only 11 games in 2019 and landed on injured reserve in December, and the team has until May 3 to decide whether to pick up the option. The option is only guaranteed for injury, but Detroit may not be comfortable risking what is likely to be $10-plus million on Davis for 2021.

Placed on IR
Davis (ankle/knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: That's now nine different Lions starters entering the year that have either been placed on injured reserve or missed at least four games due to injury. The middle linebacker will ultimately end his 2019 campaign with 63 tackles and two sacks across 11 games.

Declared out Sunday
Davis (ankle/knee) is out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Davis was unable to practice at all this week, so this comes as little surprise. Christian Jones and Jahlani Tavai could be asked to step in for the 24-year-old against the Buccaneers.

Feels lingering effects
Davis (ankle) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: Davis briefly left this past Sunday's loss to the Vikings with an ankle injury but returned and finished the game. He's still hurting, and it looks like he'll take it easy to start the week. However, if Davis is still sidelined Thursday, there will be legitimate concern about his status for Sunday's matchup against the Buccaneers.

Shakes off injury
Davis (ankle) returned to Sunday's game against the Vikings, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Davis didn't miss much time, as he was evaluated on the sidelines near the end of the first quarter and was back on the field in the second frame.

Gets hurt Sunday
Davis (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Vikings.
Analysis: It's unclear how Davis picked up the ankle issue, but he was forced to exit the contest late in the first quarter. As long as Davis is sidelined, look for Jahlani Tavai to see a bump in snaps at the middle linebacker position.

Logs sack in loss
Davis registered eight tackles (six solo) and a sack in Sunday's 19-16 loss to Washington.
Analysis: The sack was just Davis' second of the year. He has posted solid tackle totals recently, tallying eight in three straight weeks.

Makes seven tackles against Cowboys
Davis registered seven tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during Sunday's 35-27 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Davis helped play a role in Detroit's strong effort to hold Ezekiel Elliott to 2.8 yards per carry, and he almost had a sack that he let slip away. However, his biggest play came early when he helped force an Elliott fumble -- equaling as many takeaways as the Lions defense had in its previous four games. Davis could again have a strong statistical showing in Week 12 against a Washington team that is running the ball at extremely high rates under interim head coach Bill Callahan.
