Will remain No. 2 QB
Griffin will continue to be Jameis Winston's backup quarterback after Blaine Gabbert (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: The Buccaneers were holding out hope that Gabbert could make a return, but he was unable to recover. Griffin will be Winston's backup quarterback for the remainder of the season. Whenever Winston is under center, there's always a chance he falters and his backup is called upon, although he's played well enough to avoid any speculation thus far.

Throws pair of picks
Griffin completed nine of 11 passes for 92 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Buccaneers' 17-15 preseason win over the Cowboys on Thursday.
Analysis: Slated for the No. 2 quarterback job to at least start the season, Griffin saw some solid first-half action Thursday and was atypically guilty of multiple turnovers, albeit with asterisks attached. The first of Griffin's two interceptions was returned for a pick-six by Donovan Olumba but came off a tipped pass, while the second occurred at the Cowboys' 16-yard line on a pass intended for Scotty Miller. However, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that coach Bruce Arians emphasized…read more

Leads another game-winning march
Griffin completed 11 of 17 passes for 121 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Buccaneers' 13-12 preseason win over the Browns on Friday. He also netted zero yards on his sole rush and fumbled once but recovered.
Analysis: With Blaine Gabbert exiting early in the second half with a separation of his non-throwing shoulder, Griffin stepped in for another dose of extended preseason action. Ultimately, he delivered in the closing minutes yet again, helming a mammoth 16-play, 72-yard drive that culminated in Matt Gay's game-winning 21-yard field goal. Late in the third quarter, Griffin had also been responsible for the Buccaneers' only touchdown of the contest when he fired a 20-yard scoring throw to tight end Jordan…read more

Another impressive performance
Griffin completed 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Buccaneers' 16-14 preseason win over the Dolphins on Friday.
Analysis: Griffin capped off a second straight strong preseason effort by helping set up Matt Gay's game-winning 48-yard field goal, notching a pair of completions to tight end Tanner Hudson to get the ball down to the Dolphins' 27-yard line. The veteran could hardly have made a better case for himself over the first two exhibitions, quickly demonstrating his grasp of coach Bruce Arians' offense. That's a particularly important development in Griffin's competition with Blaine Gabbert, considering the…read more

Eclipses 300-yard mark in opener
Griffin completed 26 of 43 passes for 330 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Buccaneers' 30-28 preseason loss to the Steelers on Friday. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Griffin had no shortage of opportunity to showcase his skills, and he capitalized on the platform to demonstrate a solid grasp of coach Bruce Arians' offense. Game script worked in Griffin's favor as well, as the Buccaneers were in a trail position throughout the second half and continued throwing the ball until their final snap. Griffin particularly displayed excellent chemistry with undrafted rookie receiver Spencer Schnell and second-year tight end Tanner Hudson, with whom he connected for…read more

Set for offseason competition
Griffin will compete for Tampa Bay's backup quarterback role after the team signed fellow quarterback Blaine Gabbert on Monday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Griffin served as Tampa's third quarterback for the vast majority of the 2018 campaign, eventually bumping ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick for the No. 2 spot over the final two weeks. Given that Griffin hasn't attempted a pass in a regular-season game, Gabbert certainly will push him for the backup job.

Staying with Tampa
Griffin is re-signing with Tampa Bay on a two-year contract.
Analysis: Griffin served as Tampa's third quarterback for the vast majority of the 2018 campaign, eventually bumping ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick for the No. 2 spot over the final two weeks. Given that Griffin has never attempted a pass in a regular-season game, the Buccaneers likely will bring in competition for the backup job before training camp. Fitzpatrick is an unrestricted free agent and likely will sign elsewhere.

Backup to Winston again
Griffin is the sole backup to Jameis Winston again Week 17 with Ryan Fitzpatrick declared inactive versus the Falcons, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The 29-year-old will thus have another opportunity to garner his first taste of NFL game action, something coach Dirk Koetter specifically noted was on the team's radar during his Monday press conference following the Week 16 loss to the Cowboys. Sunday's game against the Falcons is essentially for draft positioning and pride for the division rivals, so Griffin could well see the field at some point in the second half.

Could play Week 17
Coach Dirk Koetter said Monday that the team would like to give Griffin his first NFL regular-season snaps in the Buccaneers' Week 17 matchup with the Falcons, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "The guy's been here for three years," Koetter said of Griffin. "He's worked his tail off."
Analysis: Though Griffin has been on either the New Orleans or Tampa Bay active rosters for much of the past six seasons, the 29-year-old remarkably has yet to make his NFL debut, even in a kneel-down scenario or as a holder on special teams. Griffin took a step toward getting work by moving ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick on the depth chart in Week 16, and he may finally get a chance to showcase his skills in the season finale in what would most likely amount to a brief cameo. While the Bucs would probably…read more

Moves up depth chart
Griffin is active and will operate as the backup quarterback in Sunday's game against Dallas, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Griffin has been behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston on the depth chart all season, but he's operating as the No. 2 passer Sunday. With the Buccaneers out of playoff contention, Griffin could see the field for the first regular-season action of his career as the team looks to see what they have in the young quarterback.
